Center of Excellence in Memory Care

Since memory loss affects people in different ways and in varying degrees, Jewish Senior Life offers a variety of settings for those with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and memory loss. For people who wish to stay in their homes and may be at the early-to-mid-stages of Alzheimer’s, Marian’s House offers a daytime retreat and overnight respite in a residential, contemporary house in Brighton. For those who need more regular care and assistance, The Lodge at Wolk Manor offers assisted living memory care. And for people with more advanced dementia, the Jewish Home has a secure area called The Gateway for long-term care.

We are dedicated to providing quality of life for those impacted by memory loss. Employees across the Jewish Senior Life campus receive dementia-specific training. Staff members who are responsible for direct, hands-on care of those with memory loss receive additional training, which focuses on providing personal care, such as bathing and dressing, and understanding and validating the source of the resident’s distress in an attempt to reduce agitation. Training sessions for family caregivers are also provided.

“…Musical favorites can bridge the divide between hopeless isolation and joyful social engagement...” Alzheimer Society of Toronto’s iPod project study, June 2014

Jewish Senior Life became the first certified care community in the Rochester area to offer the Music & MemorySM program. Caregivers provide iPods with personalized song playlists to residents with Alzheimer’s, dementia and other cognitive and physical challenges so they can reconnect with the world through music-triggered memories.

Our strategic partnership with the Rochester Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association has afforded us the opportunity to utilize community expertise to develop a customized education and training curriculum for our staff. The curriculum is specifically design to ensure staff – clinical and non-clinical  – has the the knowledge and required competencies to care and support people with memory loss, at any stage. With the implementation of a specialized memory care training program for all employees and the addition of various levels of memory care, Jewish Senior Life has established itself as a Center of Excellence in Memory Care.
