(October 23, 2022 – ROCHESTER, NY) Jewish Senior Life will host the 29th LeadingAge New York Art Competition, opening October 24 through November 7 in the Sokol Porch at Jewish Home of Rochester. The unique, traveling art exhibition features pieces created by artists who are residents, clients, volunteers, and staff of long-term care facilities, adult care facilities, and senior housing communities. A reception will take place on Wednesday, October 24 from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. to celebrate participating artists.
The annual exhibit began in 1991 and the number of pieces shown has grown from just a handful to more than 200 entries. The exhibition consists of art selected from entries in a competition that is open to individuals living in or working in organizations that are members of LeadingAge New York. Three Directors of Activities from member facilities served as jurists; and the show is comprised of work from 60 residents/registrants and 10 staff/volunteers. The artists come from a range of places and backgrounds; some are classically trained artists, others are not. They all share the common bond of artistic expression.
“We are excited to be the host of this year’s art exhibit,” says Kristina Jewell, Director of Therapeutic Recreation. She continues, “Over twenty pieces in this show were created from an initiative offered by our Creative Arts Therapist, Bob (Robert) Whiteside, called Opening Minds through Art (OMA.) The program pairs volunteers with residents living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias to help facilitate creative expression and social engagement through art.”
LeadingAge New York and LeadingAge New York Services Solutions, Inc. jointly sponsor the project. The public is invited to tour the exhibition daily at the Jewish Home of Rochester’s Farash Tower located on the Jewish Senior Life campus at 2021 Winton Road South in Rochester, NY. Due to COVID-19 and protecting the health of residents, please wear a mask, enter through the front entrance, and check in with reception.
