(May 1, 2023 – ROCHESTER, NY) On Wednesday, May 3, Jewish Senior Life will host a creative arts therapy event in recognition of Older Americans Month. Residents and staff across the campus are invited to reimagine one of the fiberglass Horses on Parade sculptures, which was donated to the Jewish Senior Life Foundation several months ago. Older Americans Month encourages flexible thinking about aging and how everyone can benefit when older adults remain engaged, independent, and included. This year’s theme, Aging Unbound, offers an opportunity to explore diverse aging experiences and how communities can combat aging stereotypes.
“I’ve always been an admirer of the Horses on Parade and we are delighted to finally have one on our campus—particularly one that highlights our creative arts program and celebrates the people we serve,” says Michael S. King, President and Chief Executive Officer at Jewish Senior Life. He continues, “This year’s theme of Aging Unbound coincides with the education on positive aging and age-friendly communities that we’ve been providing through The Clare and Jerry Rotenberg Institute on Aging at Jewish Senior Life. We’re looking forward to an event that celebrates diversity in aging experiences and allows our employees to connect with those we serve in a creative and meaningful way.”
Participants will be working from a Jackson Pollock-inspired design in Jewish Senior Life branding colors and the horse will be displayed on campus. The horse was repaired and prepared for painting by Creative Arts Therapist, Robert Whiteside, who will retire in May after two decades of innovative arts programming. Cathy Schwegler will be taking over Whiteside’s role. Paint for the project is generously provided through the Golden Artist Colors, Inc. Seconds Program, which provides products to artists and nonprofit organizations that are contributing to the value of arts in the community.
The first painting session will take place 10 a.m. – noon, and the second session is scheduled for 2 – 4 p.m. in the parking lot near the north entrance at the Jewish Home. Alternate location for inclement weather will be the Jewish Home’s Creative Arts Room.
